My experience as an S.L.S.O has been dynamic and diverse. I have supported the learning and development of children with varying strengths and needs, including students with intellectual, physical, behavioural, emotional and medical support needs and challenges. Whilst this role may be regarded as demanding, I have found it to be extremely rewarding and highly satisfying to be able to assist children to achieve their personal, social and academic goals. My experience has allowed me to support unsure, frightened young students starting Kindergarten, assist students struggling with literacy and numeracy, guide children in behavioural choices and strategies, and aide students’ development of resilience and self efficacy.
Through my experience as an S.L.S.O I have developed an understanding of the importance of teamwork and the interrelated roles of teachers, parents, students and the community in providing access to positive outcomes and opportunities for students in need of additional learning support. I have been involved in discussions related to, and have provided input into, Individual Educational Programs for the students that I support/ed. As an S.L.S.O I acknowledge that I am part of a team that is responsible for the implementation of such programs in order to best support the educational needs of the children in my care. All children are entitled to a quality educational experience and I believe that understanding, tolerance, inclusion and acceptance are vital for all children to feel the freedom to reach their full potential.
