Overview

I have been employed in the social services, since I first commenced employment as a social worker until I subsequently became a probation officer.

Early in my career, I made the decision to obtain a tertiary qualification in my chosen work field and to this end, was granted a bursary to study full time at the Auckland College of Education in Epsom. From this insitution, I graduated with a Diploma of Applied Social Studies and Certificate of Qualification in Social Work. I subsequently went on to complete a degree, a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology.

Both qualifications, including a placement at Higher Ground, as well as my choices of employment, reflected a strong sense of social justice and a desire to work with those in society who for whatever reason, were disadvantaged.

My personal circumstances led to my discovery of the reasons behind the employment and life choices I had made; I believe those choices unconsciously reflected a belief in a spiritual solution to, and an identification with, those whose lives were impacted by alcohol, drugs or gambling, in addition to maladaptive behavior patterns.

Achievements

I graduated from Massey University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology.

I also graduated from the Auckland College of Education in 1988 with a Diploma in Applied Social Studies and a Certificate of Qualification in Social Work.

I consider these to be major achievements which were augmented by the opportunity of working in both Social Welfare and Probation with those whose lifes were adversely affecetd by alcohol and/ or drugs.

Perhaps the most significant achievement of my life however was becoming sober on 22 February 1999 and joining Alcoholics Anonymous in which I have been an active and unwavering member maintaining a sober lifestyle from that date.
